Nelly, born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr on November 2, 1974, in Austin, Texas, had a father serving in the Air Force at the time of his birth. After his parents divorced when he was seven, he relocated to St. Louis, Missouri. During his teenage years, he formed his initial band, the St. Lunatics, alongside friends Ali, Murphy Lee, Kyjuan, Slo’Down, and his half-brother City Spud. The group achieved local success in 1997 with their single “Gimme What Ya Got.” Following the group’s lack of a record deal, Nelly opted to pursue a solo career.
Career
In 1999, Nelly signed with Universal Music. The next year saw the release of his debut album “Country Grammar,” which remains his top-selling album to this day. Singles supporting the album, such as “Ride Wit Me” and “Country Grammar,” achieved Top 10 success. Legal Issues
In April 2015, Nelly’s tour bus was stopped by the Tennessee Highway Patrol after an officer detected the smell of marijuana. During the search, officers discovered marijuana, drug paraphernalia, several handguns, and a substance they suspected to be meth. Consequently, Nelly was arrested and taken to county jail before being released on bail. Although he faced felony drug possession charges and other minor accusations, the felony charge was dismissed upon confirmation that the substance found was not meth. In December 2015, Nelly pleaded guilty to misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
The IRS filed a $2.4 million tax lien against Nelly due to unpaid taxes in 2016.
In the fall of 2017, Nelly was arrested near Seattle on suspicion of rape after a woman claimed he invited her onto his tour bus and assaulted her. He was booked into jail but later released, and the charges were dropped.
