Her father, Patrick, worked as a miner and was a WWII veteran, while her mother, Bridget, was a shorthand typist. As a child, Boyle faced bullying and grew up thinking her learning disability stemmed from a challenging birth that deprived her of oxygen. However, she later discovered she was misdiagnosed and actually has Asperger syndrome along with an “above average” IQ. In 1998, Boyle invested her personal savings into creating a professionally cut demo, which she distributed to record labels, radio talent competitions, and local and national television shows.
